On this one you can really see where it came from. Fashion takes from Black American rappers, specifically, and it does it with respect.
Compare it to Redred, where the closest reference I could find was fakemink. Fashion is a different lineage entirely, and to talk about it properly we have to talk about the lineage first.
Cortis Respect The Culture
This matters before any list. Cortis have worked with amazing Black rappers. Cochise. Teezo Touchdown. Juicy J. They have worked with Internet Money. They respect this culture and they genuinely understand it.
It does not feel like they are faking it. It does not feel like they are stealing from it. You can absolutely hear the resemblance between Cortis and Black rappers and underground artists, and it goes past the music. It is in the styling. It is in how they run a concert.
The Travis Scott Thing
They performed Young Creator Crew, and I think Redred too, something like three or four times in the same concert. And guess who else does that.
Yes. Exactly. Travis Scott.
They caught a lot of backlash for repeating the same song a bunch of times during a show, but that is just part of the culture. And it was not because they did not have enough songs. Some K-pop groups tour without enough material and fill the setlist with covers. That is not what happened here. This is part of the Cortis brand, part of the kind of artist they are trying to be and the culture they are trying to embody.

The Genre Is Rage
Fashion is hip hop, obviously, but more specifically I would call it rage. Do not quote me on that, I am not a know it all when it comes to music or anything really, but that is where I would put it.
And if you like this kind of thing, but especially if you like the way they do the ad-libs on this song and on Money Money Money, shoutout to Money Money Money, you are probably going to like Playboi Carti. The ad-lib recording is where the influence is loudest. Worth checking out Ken Carson too while you are in there.

The chorus is a little similar, the instrumental is a little similar, and the structure and progression move the same way. Released 28 July 2023 on Utopia, it is the track most people point at when they define rage, and it became the first Playboi Carti song to pass a billion streams on Spotify. Sheck Wes is on the original version too.
One warning if your ears live inside boy group music: this will sound a little empty. It is one or two rappers on a song. When you are used to five to nine voices trading lines it takes a second to adjust.
Praise The Lord (Da Shine)
A$AP Rocky, feat. Skepta
This one is a melody match, not a production match. Listen to the pre-chorus, the “my shade, Dior” part. When Cortis go “my tee five bucks” it sends me straight back to it. Melody wise, Praise The Lord sounds a lot like Fashion. Instrumental wise, I genuinely do not hear it, so if the beat is what you are chasing, skip down the list. 7 May 2021, lead single from Trip at Knight. It hit number 11 on the Hot 100 and is still Trippie’s highest charting song. The name of the subgenre is basically in the title, so this is as close to a definition as you are going to get.

The one song that shows up on both of my Cortis lists, because it sits exactly between Redred and Fashion. Blown out synths, drum machine pressure, no fat.

2 December 2022, and it came out through the Need for Speed Unbound soundtrack, which is a very funny way for a song this hard to reach people. Video followed three days later.

The story on this one is unreal. It was recorded across nearly four years, from November 2019 to June 2023, and it was originally made for Kanye’s Jesus Is King and then Donda, before he handed it over to Travis, who had been the featured artist on his version. It ended up as the penultimate track on Utopia.

From BULLY, 2026. Track nine, with ad-libs from Nine Vicious. Whatever anyone thinks of him at this point, the album broke the biggest hip hop streaming record on Spotify for the year, so the sound is landing.
